The British government is currently undertaking a massive prison expansion project, with plans to build 5 new “mini-Titan”” prisons, 4 other new prisons, plus increases in the number of spaces within existing prisons. This means creating places for more than 20,000 new prisoners by 2014. There are also plans for expanding immigration detention centres. The government's push for new prisons and immigration detention centres is not based what communities actually need -- it merely extends a longer legacy of failed criminal justice policy and flawed "tough on crime" approaches.
